Few reds....no trout for us.

After a wasted day of trying to put something together in a stiff NW wind and a dirty lake Friday, we found some decent reds in the clearer drains on the river the following afternoon.  It wasn't lights out good, but we kept six solid slot fish in three hours of fishing. A shallow running crankbait and a black-chartreuse Usual Suspect Swim Bait fooled most of the fish.

We just cannot put together a productive trout pattern.  The trout we have caught have been small as have the numbers.  I have no doubt someone has it figured out, but I haven't talked to them.  The big outgoing tide and more north wind should push even more shrimp into the lake and the trout will hopefully start doing there thing on a more frequent basis.  We'll see!

Lot of wind...lot of reds

We were hoping to take advantage of a strong north wind yesterday evening that was pushing a lot of water out of the marshes, but we failed once again to catch anything other than redfish.  They were leaving in droves and there was a mix of fish from 16 to 31 inches.  We fished Cow bayou, Black's and Burton's ditch and the bite was the same in all three areas.

We didn't fish long as it was a last minute decision to give it a shot, but the modest cool front should improve the catching this week.  The water still looked good and we saw more bait than we had seen all week long.  far from what you would expect this time of the year, but at least it was a bite!

Wading yielding more trout!

A little shot of fall late last week really helped with the catching, but it quickly got tough again.  We continue to to pretty well with the redfish even on the toughest days and the flounder bite is slowly improving as well, but consistently catching trout is a challenge.  The high tides last week scattered the bait and our fish, but a big outgoing tide two days in a row helped.

There is no doubt that the trout catching has been tough, but that does not mean it is a waste of time.  It is the easy trout that we can't find or catch and that is due, in part, to the fact that we have not been wading.  At the same time we were drifting and doing poorly I watched waders catching fish on several occasions.  I do what clients can and want to do!

Corkies and a black/chartreuse head She Dog produced decent catches of trout up to three pounds early last week for waders fishing the Louisiana shoreline.  The farther south you ran the worse the water looked, but it didn't bother the fish.  We aren't just catching the fool out of them yet, but we have caught several flounder in the 3 to 4 pound class on 3-inch Swim baits and four inch Seas Shads soaked with a liquid scent.

Better weather has attracted more fishermen and that always produces more reports of catching.  No matter how poorly I am doing someone is always catching fish!
