Warmer and higher water today!!

After back to back days of catching reds until we had caught more than enough  redfish, I decided to take today off and take care of an ever growing list of "honey dos".  I got three or four of them done before i could no longer pass on the perfect weather conditions. I made several quick calls that would have required someone being ready at that exact moment, but could find no takers and went alone.

 

The water was dirtier and much higher than I have seen it in a week, but the fish were still doing their thing.  I caught redfish just long enough to make sure they were still there before looking for the trout.  I found them in 3 to 4 feet of water and they were ready to eat a chartreuse Catch 2000 and a day glow  Fat Boy.  i never caught a fish over four pounds, but all of the trout were good solid 17 to 21 inch fish.

I also saw two other boats enjoying the same bite.  They looked like they may have been fishing the same lures or possibly swimming a tail on a light head.  One of them caught and released what looked to be a trout in the 6 to 7 pound class.  i quit at 3:00 hoping to knock out another couple of chores, but that didn't happen.  Gene and Doug talked me into making our annual run over to the Boat Show so I will be over there again tomorrow.

Cold surface temperature hasn't slowed down a very good bite!

The biggest problem we had last week was launching....not catching.  In spite of the cold (we were still fishing 43 degree water Friday afternoon) we caught a lot of fish everyday. We started the week off catching some of the best trout I have caught this year and ended the week just pounding the redfish.  Much of the water that we were catching our trout in earlier in the week was down to the mud and we couldn't find therm in the nearest deep water.

You know the bite is good when the few fishermen we saw everyday were convinced they were on the best bite in the lake regardless of what they were doing.  We caught our trout on fat Boys and She Dogs and our reds on tails and Swim Baits.  Amazingly enough, as good as the bite was we saw very little bait on the surface.  The reds I kept and cleaned were full of bream and big mullet.

I hope to get over to the Boat Show one day this week, but I have a lot to do and a short time to do it.  I dropped by Outcast Tackle and Steve was unloading a brand new shipment of Fat Boys and Softdine XL's.  The only bad news was that he had a waiting list of people to call as soon as they arrived.  This is early to already have trouble finding Corkies.  Corey Rambo also said he had some on the way to his store on MacArthur drive in Orange.
