Sometimes you just make a bad call based on an errant guesstimation by the weatherman and that is what happened today. I cannot recall the last time they missed the wind on the low side and all of the rain got here much later than predicted as well, but we had already canceled the night before.
When I could stand it no longer, Ron and I made a quick run anyway partly because of the almost perfect conditions and partly because he wanted to check out two new props. We were able to check out only the first one because we used up all of his allotted time catching trout!
Patience was the difference maker on a windy morning!
Both Tuesday and Wednesday we caught a break early with the wind and caught some very solid trout swimming Usual Suspects and five inch tails on a 1/8th ounce head. It took me a while to put a consistent pattern together, but things improved when we started drifting the color change on the flats on the north end of the lake. The wind didn't set up for that drift too well, but we managed to hold the line with the troll motor. Rick, Hannah and Buddy's patience were appreciated as the best bite didn't start until around 10:30.
The following morning Russell and John joined me and we started fishing that same pattern at first light. I have no idea how many nice trout we pulled off or jumped off in the first two hours, but we still finished with a good box of fish. We also spent the better part of an hour just before noon fishing a flock of gulls that never moved or quit working and we were able to keep only two out of 50 to 60 fish.
It really didn't matter at that point, but regardless of what we threw in the middle of all of that surface activity we still caught sand trout and small specks for the most part. While they were catching a fish every cast on tails, I tried a Hoginar, Corky, Catch 2000 and She Dog and continued to catch the same size fish. We returned to the flats, caught two more keeper trout on one drift and almost beat the rain back to the dock.
The trout this morning just went nuts and they were all good fish. We released several fish that we neither weighed or measured, but they were big ol fish. We weren't keeping fish anyway, but we could have easily kept two limits of 2 to 3 pound fish. The only difference today was that the off-colored water extended further out into the lake so we basically tried to drift the same depth as the day before which was 3 1/2 to 4 feet.
I hope the weatherman misses tomorrow's doom and gloom forecast as well!
