I am getting better much quicker than expected and if I get one more report even close to the two I got yesterday, I may be completely healed up by tomorrow morning!
The past two days were ideal weather-wise and while I was not surprised that they caught fish, I did not expect them to have, as Brad put it, epic days. I was a little surprised that they did so well at daylight as cold as it was, but the water heated up into the mid 50's each day and the bite only got better.
There is no telling how many different lures would have worked, but they were doing too well with Corkies and Catch V's to change. With the water in the mid-50's I feel like there is probably a topwater bite going on as well, but I can understand them not wanting to experiment when they are already catching the heck out of the fish.
It apparently hasn't made a great deal of difference whether you waded or drifted, even for catching some of the largest trout, but the better bite has been on a slow outgoing tide in 2 to 4 feet of water. Two specks over 7 and one over 8 were taken drift fishing Monday.
I do know that any time you can stand in one spot and catch 30 to 40 trout and a few big slot reds in less than three hours....the bite is on. The reds have also been schooling under the birds, but the trout under the birds are small.
The same folks that did well the last two days struggled Sunday fishing the same area. The easy bite will probably get a little tougher over the next few days as this front rolls through. It is supposed to warm up again after that so the weekend may be pretty good. The river clarity held up pretty good after the rain and the striper bite has also gotten much more consistent.
Even fresher report: Fortunately, I had to run pick up a gift this afternoon before finishing this blog and had another report on the answering machine when I got back. The wind blew all day long, but the temperature has yet to drop and the trout are still on a tear ahead of the front. They caught and released at least two limits of trout up to 25-inches from 9:30 until just after lunch today.
I agreed to not to draw any maps, but they said they were wading in three feet of water and casting dead into the wind. They caught every fish on pumpkin-chartreuse 5-inch Assassins rigged on 1/8th ounce heads. They also said they figured there was a lot of bait in the area, but they really could not see it for the waves and that the water was badly silted up.
That call sealed the deal for me. If the weather is even half way decent, my recuperating period will officially end the day after Christmas.
God bless all of you and I wish each of you and your family a very Merry Christmas!
Wish you get to feeling better have a Happy New Year. Miss your post, may see you on the water soon.
