I have seen the water get blown out before, but not like it was Wednesday. On the strength of a good report, we were determined to get in a little fishing and that is exactly what we got...a little fishing, but no catching. The freezing wind was bad enough, but we also got muddy, cold, and semi-stuck. I won't bore you with the details. The water was dirty, of course, and the only two spots we really wanted to check out were reduced to mud flats. We found a few redfish in the river, but that was not the purpose of the short trip.
The conditions were not much better today as the wind just howled all day long. It was warmer and we did have a little more water, but caught only four trout. Two of the fish hit a bone Catch V and we caught the other two on a pearl Spoiler Shad. The water we fished was 53 degrees and dirty, but there was a lot of bait in the area.
We will have to wait and see how well the redfish bite holds up in this colder weather, but having to pick our days in January and February to hunt a big trout is nothing new for me. It gets a little depressing having to sit down and file far more bad reports than good ones, but I go back most every day just like I had good sense!
I hate the discomfort associated with winter fishing, like having to pee as soon as I get my waders on, but knowing how incredibly good it can get for an hour or so on any given day makes it worth the hassle. I am going to be at the Boat Show on the 10th and have a seminar at 6:30. I'll be talking about some of the lures and techniques that have worked well for me on Sabine during those brief feeding sprees that keep us coming back.
