At the risk of sending folks on a snipe hunt, I've been a little reluctant to report what has been a pretty consistent bite on the reefs north of the Causeway for the past two weeks. The water is improving now, but it was fresh and dirty when the bite started.
The first real test came yesterday as we were forced to fish an outgoing tide all day long and the fish still bit. We had been taking advantage of any incoming tide and the better water it brought with it each day. Depending on how long the window of opportunity was open, you may or may not limit on solid trout and a few scattered redfish.
Even with clearing water, a handful of colors have been the best producers in your choice of soft plastics. Yesterday we limited using red shad, pumpkinseed and morning glory Assassins. There were as many trout in seven feet of water as there were in fifteen feet and that has not been the case. Over the past week we have managed to catch and release a trout or two over the six pound mark, but we had no trout that size yesterday.
The fish may stay in this area a while as the fish cleaned had no shrimp in their stomachs. They were eating sand eels and small bait fish. We are also catching two to four keeper flounder each trip while drifting for trout.
