Yesterday and today could not have been more perfect...at least weather-wise. There is not a doubt in my mind that someone has just been hammering the trout, but it wasn't me. We saw only a couple other boats in the areas we fished and never saw them boat a fish either. Most of the traffic was still in the river. Very little tide movement much of the day and a dead calm lake combined to give me fits.
When the incoming picked up in the afternoon the redfish started doing their thing, but I could not find the big trout that were all over three different flats last week. I did hook one nice trout (it was the only one) just before we quit that broke my leader just above my bait. That's what happens when you jack around catching a kazillion redfish and are too lazy to re-tie!
The water is still in great shape and the surface temperature was up to 61 today. I ran over to Daley's Tuesday to buy another cranking battery and found no more Maniac Mullets on their racks. They weren't just out of the colors I needed...they were down to only two or three in a couple of colors. Damon Silva didn't help things either as he was showing pictures of big trout that they had caught recently on the Mullet in the Neches and the Sabine.
Keith sold the hundred he ordered last week in 3 days so I hope he ordered a lot more this time. They are getting as hard to find as Corkies were a few years back. Aaron was taking orders on the phone from folks getting him to sack their's up as soon as they come in so Dana and Shawn better be building a bunch!
I had been doing well on the pink glitter and the pearl chartreuse, but I put them on the bench when the redfish crashed the party. We caught them on Swim Baits and Day Glow Fat Boys. I wasn't just sacrificing Corkies either as those Fat Boys had been glued back together more than once.
It looks like we may get some rain, but this is unreal weather for January. I am going to have to do some serious scouting, but I enjoy that as much as guiding...it just doesn't pay nearly as well.
