We are in a wait and see mode right now as the Sabine river is expected to reach major flood stage tomorrow which means we have a lot more dirty water headed our way. So far, very little has changed in the lake. The birds are still working and the big winners are the folks that find the quality trout.
It was good all weekend as far as the catching went, but the sand trout and small specks were beating the better trout to the bait. Slot reds were still everywhere so it wasn't like you weren't going to get your drag pulled every now and then. Color and length of the tail wasn't as critical as staying on the move.
Lane and Patti LeJeune had the best bunch of specks of anyone I talked with Saturday. They kept 17 trout up to four pounds and they never chased the birds. Patti said they drifted one 3 to 5 foot flat in the Garrison's Ridge area over and over with 3-inch Swim Baits rigged on a 2-foot leader under a Mauler. She said the reds blew up around them several times, but they never chased them either.
Johnny pulled a trip Sunday and said they had a good day on both reds and some specks. He said they went through a lot of small trout also. I'll be back on the water the rest of the week and I'd be satisfied with the bite we have right now!
