Big bite under a full moon
Dallas Hale with trout at first light
We really had a solid week on Sabine last week punctuated by the full moon across the weekend. The big trout started doing their thing again and we finally got to fish a dead calm lake on Saturday. Folks able to fish at night cashed in on trout up to 28 inches fishing black-chartreuse She Dogs in 2-3 feet of water.
We found our better trout at that same depth just before daylight each day fishing both spinnerbaits and topwaters. The bite was crazy for the first thirty minutes which marked the end of the night flurry. Prior to Saturday's fantastic conditions we would either work the shorelines are hustle small groups of gulls in the open lake with Sea Shad in LSU, Texas Roach, and Glow-chartreuse.
We found trout feeding all over the open lake Saturday. Most of them were chasing schools of small shad. We caught them on Spooks, She Dogs, Sea Shads, and Crazy Croakers. The fish would hold long after the gulls moved on and they were solid trout mixed with a few slot reds. The water was extremely clear across most of the lake.
I don't fish much on the weekend, but I was a little surprised at the number of boats on the water with gas now pushing $3.00 a gallon. Because it was so calm for a change, folks didn't crowd each other too badly. We did have a couple of boats run between us and the shoreline while we were only a short cast off the bank, but we don't see stuff like that much on week days.
Berkman brothers shared a great day on the water
Larry and John Berkman brought a big crew down to fish with us this weekend and they were a lot of fun. Larry enjoyed the sunrise on the lake each morning as it is his favorite color. He is a devoted Longhorn fan and will fish with an Aggie or Sooner, but they better be thick skinned!
